ABB optimizes processes to better service high-volume orders

2017-09-29 - Outdoor power distribution equipment prepared for high-capacity orders with quick turnaround and reliable delivery.

ABB, the pioneering technology leader, continues to improve lead time, delivery, and customer service for its industry-leading instrument transformer products at a time when many customers are experiencing uncertainty with their providers.

ABB has accomplished this through Lean Six Sigma continuous improvement activities across the spectrum of its operation in the Pinetops, NC factory, one of 162 facilities in the United States. Factory efforts, such as identifying and optimizing the material condition of key components used during the manufacturing process, along with increasing manufacturing flexibility and capacity through cross-training and addition of key resources, have led to ABB being able to maintain short lead times and even offer additionally reduced lead times for urgent needs.

ABB’s latest improvements have centered upon its injection molding and winding processes and the identification of optimal material condition for key components. These improvements have allowed ABB to decrease 600 V instrument transformer lead times to four weeks and mean that all major medium-voltage instrument transformer design lead times are now between four and six weeks. Expedited requests are easily handled to allow for even shorter lead times. By keeping manufacturing processes flexible, a well-planned stock on hand, and a reliable global and local supplier network, ABB is fully-equipped for a quick delivery and the ability to increase capacity on a short turnaround.

“The ongoing continuous improvement efforts at the instrument transformer facility enable us to offer stable short lead times, even for high volume orders,” said Julia Des Chenes, Marketing Manager for Electrification Products Medium Voltage, Control and Protection Products - Apparatus. “Furthermore, ABB’s team in Pinetops can offer unparalleled support for emergency needs.”

These improvements come at a time when other manufacturers may be exiting the 600 V instrument transformer market. Customers formerly purchasing through such manufacturers continue to have a dependable provider in ABB, one that is capable of fulfilling large volume demand and expediting new orders. ABB’s continued investment in this technology is a reassurance to the market that while other companies may come and go, its commitment to customers is unwavering.
